Somewhere in your next vendor review, someone is going to ask how the AI in your stack is governed. If you own the behavioral data underneath it, that question lands on you.

As of July 21, 2026, Snowplow's AI management system (AIMS) is certified to ISO/IEC 42001:2023, the international standard for AI management systems, following an independent third-party audit by Citation ISO Certification Limited. An AI management system is the set of policies, processes, and controls an organization uses to govern how it builds and runs AI. It is not a piece of software. 

The certificate covers the delivery, management, and customization of Snowplow's data infrastructure for the collection and processing of customer behavioral data. Snowplow also holds ISO/IEC 27001 and SOC 2 Type II.

What ISO 42001 certifies

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the first international standard for an AI management system, published jointly by ISO and IEC in December 2023. ISO 42001 is to AI governance what ISO 27001 is to information security.

The standard does not certify a product, a model, or a feature. It certifies how an organization manages AI across its lifecycle: risk assessment, impact evaluation, data governance, system lifecycle management, and oversight of third-party suppliers. It follows a plan-do-check-act cycle, so the controls are reviewed and improved on an ongoing basis rather than audited once and filed away.

The scope on Snowplow's certificate includes:

In plainer terms, it covers how Snowplow governs the AI used in and to deliver the customer data infrastructure you run on.

What it means if you're the one being asked

If you are building an AI governance program or preparing for the EU AI Act, Snowplow's ISO 42001 certificate is evidence that the AI capabilities you use from us are governed by an audited management system. That is one fewer supplier you need to assess from scratch.

It also reflects how Snowplow already works. You own and govern your own behavioral data, and it lands in your own warehouse or lake, defined by your own schemas. Where AI acts inside the product, the controls are explicit: the Snowplow Assistant operates within your existing Console permissions, has no access to personal data or PII, and requires your confirmation before any action that modifies data.

Q: How does Snowplow govern AI used in or to deliver its product?

Snowplow operates an AI management system certified to ISO/IEC 42001:2023 by Citation ISO Certification Limited, certificate 522382026, valid to 20 July 2027. No. Your organization is not certified by association. Snowplow's certificate covers Snowplow's own AI management system. If you are building or certifying your own AI governance program, Snowplow's certificate is supplier assurance evidence for the AI capabilities you use from us, which can reduce the diligence work on your side.

Q: Is the certification accredited?

Snowplow's certificate was issued by Citation ISO Certification Limited, which is accredited to ISO/IEC 17021:2015 by Accreditation Services for Certification Bodies (ASCB). ASCB is a private accreditation body and is not the United Kingdom's national accreditation body. If your procurement requirements specify certification issued under the international mutual recognition arrangement, please raise this with your account team so we can discuss it directly.
