Snowplow Spotlight: Mick Faulkner

Mick Faulkner – Account Executive
How would you describe what you do in a nutshell
As part of the account executive team I act as the main point of contact for many of the brands exploring Snowplow’s commercial offering. I speak with our prospective customers to understand their business goals and their objectives as it pertains to behavioural data, and help them evaluate Snowplow and (hopefully!) understand how we can provide a solution aligned with those requirements and aspirations.
What does an average day look like for you?
Generally speaking my day is spent preparing for and running zoom meetings with my contacts at various stages of their buying process, making cold contact with brands we have identified as a strong fit for our technology, and generally managing my own pipeline of potential new business, which involves a fair amount of record keeping and admin within our CRM.There is also a lot of collaboration with other teams at Snowplow both in terms of coordinating our internal expertise to best assist in a potential customer’s evaluation, and also in returning feedback from the frontlines to inform our own strategy and roadmap.
How did you get to do what you are doing?
I graduated in Economics and swiftly decided that the graduate roles my peers were pursuing weren’t for me, and so instead spent 18 months bartending and travelling South America. On returning to reality I fell into tech pretty much by accident after taking a call from a recruiter and applying on a whim. I relocated to London to start in business development for a SAAS business in the MarTech space and luckily, enjoyed the role immensely and spent 3 fantastic years there, moving from SDR to an account exec role before eventually moving to Snowplow last year.
How does working for Snowplow compare to previous roles?
Given that I started at Snowplow in March 2020, it’s quite difficult to compare my time here with my previous role for obvious reasons! The biggest differences outside the social limitations are all very positive – by virtue of now being part of a smaller company I’ve been fortunate to work far closer with our c-level and department heads than I was previously afforded, and it’s been very motivating being a part of the rapid growth we have been fortunate to see over the past year. The Snowplow technology itself is received incredibly well in the market and is a more unique and innovative value proposition than at my last role, which certainly makes my life a lot easier as a salesperson!
What has kept you motivated and sane throughout lockdown?
I’ve luckily been able to stay connected with friends reasonably well throughout lockdown through a number of online mediums; whether it’s the unhealthy number of hours I invested in playing Call of Duty during lockdown #1, or over zoom for my weekly game of poker or my 1000th game of Among Us. The gym was a massive part of what kept me motivated while it was open as I was able to focus my attention there and maintain a sense of productivity and progress, and so the latest lockdown has admittedly been quite bleak, but I’ve tried to come to accept as best I can that it’s not the end of the world if I have a few more weeks/months spent binging Netflix.
How do you make the most out of remote working?
The best part is the extra sleep! I am not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination so the extra hour or so back in my day and the cutting down on caffeine relative to when I was commuting has been appreciated and I think has actually made me more productive. More broadly, the flexibility and autonomy over how we structure our day is really useful particularly given that we frequently speak with people in very different time zones.
What are you most looking forward to this year?
A year ago I never would have thought I’d say this – but I’m looking forward to going into the office! Snowplow is growing really quickly and even a lot of the people who have been here for a while are still just faces on a screen to me, so there are a lot of people to meet properly and to spend time with outside the confines of a zoom meeting. I’m holding out hope, perhaps naively, that I will be able to make a music festival in the summer or have a relatively normal holiday somewhere cool, but failing any of that I genuinely think at this point I’d be ecstatic just to sit in a mediocre pub with a room temperature pint with just a handful of friends.
